Nancy Glimm — Artist

Nancy Glimm began her formal training at the Art Students League of New York. She studied studio art, drawing from live models. Her first instructor was Sidney Dickenson with whom she worked for several years. She was trained in a number of mediums; charcoal, conte, pen and ink as well as oil painting. Ms. Glimm focused on the structure of the human body as it existed in space, observing light, shade and volume with ever greater interest.

Ms. Glimm attended Bennington College for four years where she continued her training in drawing, painting and sculpture with Pat Adams, Sidney Tillem, Philip Wofford and Isaac Witkin. Her work with critiqued by the author and art critic Clement Greenberg. During these years her work underwent a transformation as she began to do large abstract paintings following the influence of the Color Field movement. She continued to work representationally influenced by her teacher Sidney Tillem. Despite working in both abstract and representational venues she continued exploring space, form, color, light and movement.  She found freedom in both forms of expressions and continued to paint both abstractly and representationally, believing she did not have to limit her choice of subject matter.

The artist moved to Boston after completing her training at Bennington. She exhibited her work in open studio shows and group shows. She began to explore painting directly from nature, taking her subject matter from the beaches, marshes and woodland areas around Boston and Cambridge. Her work became more consistently representational as she focused more on observing nature. She became interested in painting unique architecture, such as old beach houses and undertook studies of the clay cliffs, the marshlands and rock jetties of Martha’s Vineyard. She explored urban landscapes focusing her art on the effects of light on buildings, observing the passing of time, the shifting of color.

Ms. Glimm has lived in New York City since 1992. Her subject matter ranges from urban landscape, interiors, still life and portraits to natural landscapes. Her work is represented in private collections in the United States and New Zealand.  She holds Masters degrees from Harvard University and Smith College.
